\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b>In 2006 a Copenhagen newspaper printed some anti-Muslim cartoons, including one of the Prophet with a bomb in his turban. The mullahs made a stink of it and Muslims rioted outside of Danish embassies around the world. In America, conservatives celebrated the Danes by reprinting the cartoons and showing Danish flags. I might have done the same years before, but I had worked with Muslims in Hong Kong and I knew this insulted millions of people who were not terrorists. I didn\u2019t see any profit in doing that, and I thought the Christians and Jews were dishing out medicine they would never accept themselves. A Christian from suburban Seattle sends me the inflammatory drawing of Muhammad from the Danish newspaper. He dares me, \u201cGo ahead! Print it!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Stefan Sharkansky of Seattle posts it on his Internet site, Sound Politics. \u201cI encourage my fellow anti-theocracy bloggers and newspapers to stand with Europe\u2019s newspapers and post some of these cartoons.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

No.<\/span><\/p>

A taboo prevents American newspapers from running cartoons attacking Sharkansky\u2019s religion, which is Judaism. The same taboo, I think, should apply to images made deliberately to provoke Islam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

That taboo was not respected by the secular liberal press 15 years ago, when Andres Serrano unveiled a \u201csculpture\u201d of Jesus submerged in urine. Christians had to grit their teeth and put up with it. Now the Muslims are faced with caricatures in a Danish newspaper, and we face the same question.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Do Muslims get special treatment because in the Middle East they riot? Violence does focus the mind. If Christians, Jews and Muslims are due the same respect \u2014 and they are \u2014 perhaps the \u201carts community\u201d should not have embraced \u201cPiss Christ.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

What of freedom of expression? There are two aspects of it, about which Americans are perpetually confused.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The first is legal. \u201cCongress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.\u201d That restricts what the government does.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The second aspect is cultural. It is a side dish to the First Amendment. It is the idea that a diversity of opinion is good. This idea influences employers, private associations and private media, including this page. It\u2019s a presumption only, not a right. Always there are beliefs, opinions and images that are out of bounds. There are images of Jesus \u2014 or Martin Luther King, or the pope, or any person \u2014 that may not be shown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The question raised by the Danish cartoons is whether reasonable people should choose to show a cartoon deliberately blaspheming Islam. Really, it is about the status of Islam \u2014 how important we think it is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Another part of the First Amendment is freedom of religion. Legally, this is about freedom from the government. Again, there is a cultural side dish: In America we make religious freedom work by not attacking the other fellow\u2019s beliefs.\u00a0<\/span>That is what those cartoons do. The believer thinks it\u2019s a sin to picture Muhammad, and we do it anyway and say, \u201cHey! Get a load of this!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

It is not the drawing alone. A sketch of a bearded man with a bomb in his turban is fine. You may imply he\u2019s a Muslim, and that\u2019s OK. Say it\u2019s the Prophet, and you insult 1.5 billion believers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

None of this means it is OK to stir up a riot and burn down a foreign consulate. It\u2019s not, the West has said it is not, and even the spokesman for Hamas asked people not to do it. Nor does it mean the press has to bow to every person who has his feelings hurt, or else discussion would end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

It does mean that citing freedom of speech is not enough. There has to be judgment. Not censorship, which is what government does, but judgment, which is that cultural side dish that goes along with free speech.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

An American woman who had converted to Islam and was living in Kuwait wrote me, \u201cI just wanted to thank you for your column. (I got it from Antiwar.com.)…<\/span><\/i><\/p>

\u201cThis Danish newspaper knew exactly what it was doing and published those cartoons for no other reason than to provoke Muslims. And even after seeing how offensive it is, others call for everyone else to print the cartoons in some sort of \u2018solidarity\u2019 with the Danish editor. \u2018Solidarity\u2019 in what?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>

Sound Politics blogger Jim Miller disputed my statement that \u201cthere are images of Jesus \u2014\u00a0or Martin Luther King, or the Pope, or any person \u2014 that may not be shown.\u201d He wrote: \u201cIn fact, all three have been attacked with cartoons, and in other ways.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>
