During World War I he was on the editorial board of the <em>New York Times<\/em> and a confidant of Bernard Baruch, Woodrow Wilson&#8217;s economic czar. Later, Garrett was a confident of Herbert Hoover. For 20 years, Garrett was a staff writer for the <em>Saturday Evening Post<\/em>, where he led two \u00a0crusades \u2014 against the New Deal and against American involvement in World War II. He lost both of them, but left behind a trail of colorful argument. H.L. Mencken, that era&#8217;s master of style, credited Garrett with being the one writer on economics who did not &#8220;make an autopsy of it.&#8221;<\/p><p style=\"caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-family: -webkit-standard;\">Seattle writer Bruce Ramsey had a 37-year career in newspapers and magazines as a business reporter, editor and columnist in Seattle and Hong Kong. He edited three collections of Garrett&#8217;s journalism published the Caxton Press: <em>Salvos Against the New Deal: Selections from the Saturday Evening Post 1933-1940<\/em> (2002), <em>Defend America First: The Antiwar Editorials of the Saturday Evening Post 1939-1942<\/em> (2003) and <em>Insatiable Government: Essays by Garet Garrett<\/em> (2008).
